Stock ID: 64893 Colour map, colour photographic illustrations, xix + 203pp, appendices which include signatures, seals, chronology, glossary, bibliography, concordance, index, ribbon marker, dustjacket protected with acid free, fully recyclable polypropylene covering, quarto. "The celebrated Chinese artist Bada Shanren (1626-1705) was born into a branch of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) imperial family that was known for its literary and artistic accomplishments. When the Ming dynasty fell in 1644, Bada fled his hometown of Nanchang, Jiangxi, and took refuge in a Buddhist temple, where he remained as a monk for more than thirty years and soon rose to the position of abbot. During this period, he painted and wrote calligraphy under a variety of Buddhist names -Xxuege, Chuanqi, Ren'an, Fajue, and Geshan. In the early 1680s, the artist returned to the secular world, married briefly, and began landscape painting for the first time. In 1684 he started writing and painting under the pseudonym Bada Shanren, becoming one of the most prominent individualist painters of the early Qing dynasty (1644-1911)." (Publisher's description). Mi Fu on Ink Stones.
GULIK, R.H. VAN. Stock ID: 118402 English with chinese characters, map, black and white illustrations, index, dustjacket. The original Chinese text of Mi Fu's Yen Shih first published in 1938 is reproduced, alongside the English translation. The great Song Dynasty poet and artist, Mi Fu (1051-1107), wrote treatises on painting and calligraphy, in addition to the present work on ink-stones, translated here by the eminent Dutch diplomat and Sinologist, Dr. R H van Gulik. In the case of the first two works, the subjects of Mi Fu's deliberations have long since disappeared. There remain, however, numerous surviving examples of ink-stones from the Song and earlier dynasties, enabling us to compare Mi Fu's words with the actual objects he describes. The importance of the ink-stone as an essential tool of the Chinese literati and thus the importance of our understanding its nature to our overall comprehension of Chinese brushwork, is but one aspect of the present work. The ink-stone is, in addition to a tool, a work of art in its own right, combining the skill and wit of the sculptor with the ancient Chinese tradition of appreciation of beautiful stones. In Mi Fu on Ink-stones, Dr van Gulik provides not only a guide to the connoisseurship of this essential treasure of the scholar's studio, but also an illuminating glimpse into the mind of this brilliant eleventh century artist. The Chinese Scholar's Desk.
CAMERON, NIGEL. Stock ID: 63146 Pictorial endpapers, colour photographic illustrations, 103pp, octavo, dustjacket. To the Chinese scholar, the preparation for recording his thought was as important as the execution. On his desk lay the Four Treasures, the symbols of his calling: paper, brushes, inkslab and ink, so arranged as to inspire the best of his talent. His finely ground and watered ink was the medium for transmitting his message, his brush the conduit through which his spirit flowed on to carefully chosen paper. Calligraphy in China ranked on a par with painting and poetry, as hallmarks of a man of accomplishment and discriminating taste. This book takes the reader into the scholar?s study and seats him at that desk. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 63146) ... more |

Chinese Calligraphy.
YEE, CHIANG. Stock ID: 123576 Diagrams, script, 230pp, bibliography, index, hardback. "Besides being the highest form of Chinese art, calligraphy is in a sense the chief and most fundamental element in every branch of it. Chinese characters not only convey thought but also express in a peculiar visual way the beauty of the thought. If a student can understand the literal meaning of the words, so much the better, but one of my incentives in writing this book is to encourage an enjoyment of Chinese calligraphy without the labour of learning the language. I hope to share with my readers a simple appreciation of the beauty in the movement of strokes and the patterns of structures." Chiang Yee.
