The name of Edward Lear is familiar as that of author and illustrator of the famous Nonsense Verses, but as a travel-writer and landscape-painter he is now little known. This is due in part to the fact that he died before carrying out his intention to publish his illustrated journal describing his last journey, his trip to India during the 1870s. Between November 1873, and January 1875, he produced the extra-ordinary number of 20,000 or more water-colours while travelling from one end of the country to the other.
