Avatars And Antiheroes. A Guide to Contemporary Chinese Artists.
ALBERTINI, CLAUDIA. Stock ID: 122691 Colour photographic illustrations, 174pp, dustjacket. Chinese contemporary art is currently enjoying a worldwide boom, fetching record-breaking prices at auction houses around the globe. The country's rapid transition from Communism to consumerism, and the dizzying changes brought about by urbanization, globalization and new technologies have created a fascinating explosion of art overwhelmingly concerned with the search for self-identity in a society that, from Confucius to Mao, has traditionally disregarded individualism for the collective good. Avatars and Antiheroes reflects the schizophrenic undercurrents of a nation in continuous fast-forward. From the Cynical Realism and Political Pop movements associated with the post-Tiananmen generation of artists such as Yue Minjun, whose grinning representations of himself as antihero seem to mock the revolutionary heroes of old, to the pop-culture generation spearheaded by Cao Fei, whose digital avatars live in a world without borders, this book showcases the work of the most important contemporary artists to emerge from China in recent years. Stunning full-color plates of the work of Chinas leading painters, photographers, sculptors, performance artists, video artists, and even a fireworks artist are complemented by insightful commentary from Beijing-based art specialist Claudia Albertini, who personally interviewed many of the artists featured. Xiao Bo. Clips Segments.
SMITH, KAREN. Stock ID: 126889 Colour illustrations, concertina style chinese binding, in slip case, 70pp. "Clips·Segments" Xiao Bo Solo Exhibition was held on April 26, 2008 at Platform China. The forepart works of Xiao Bo mainly draws materials from old photos and cinema fragments, etc. of old times and mainly adopts the pictures concerning the historical events and leader roles which are world famous or widely known. However, his recent works are focus on the individuals and humanistic environment concerning the ordinary populace, instead public figures and history. Xiao Bo acquires character figures and characteristics on which he is interested from books, magazines, internet and even curio markets. In his concise pictures, the profiles of political leaders, such as Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping become the mouthpieces and special symbols in China's ideology domain. He expresses more artistic conception by abstract technique and few lines. The drawings bring Xiao Bo the discussion on the new expression forms which were increasingly changed from the excitement arising from creation. He is not satisfied with the visual tricks. The focus of his drawings distracts from hues and brushworks and he pays much more attention on the plot, namely, instantaneousness, eliminating the false and retaining the true, weeding the color disturbing the vision, which definitely makes the audience to identify the role conversion among the figures in the pictures without expending a lot of time. Nine Lives. The Birth of the Avant-Garde in New China.
SMITH, KAREN. Stock ID: 126886 Colour photographic illustrations, 469pp, paperback. In 1993, 10 contemporary Chinese artists debuted at the 45th Venice Biennale. The reception was lukewarm: people wanted to know if and when the Chinese avant-garde would cut through certain quaint notions of oriental mystique and evolve a distinct identity. Today, contemporary Chinese art is everywhere, and the innovations of the artists in this volume are now recognized as primary catalysts for the contemporary scene. "Nine Lives: The Birth of Avant-Garde Art in New China," first published in 2005 and now available in a revised edition, focuses on the stories of nine individuals who set it all in motion--Wang Guangyi, Geng Jianyi, Fang Lijun, Gu Dexin, Li Shan, Zhang Xiaogang, Xu Bing, Zhang Peili and Wang Jianwei. Now in its second edition, this insightful study is standard reading for anyone interested in contemporary Chinese art. Every chapter is fully illustrated with images chronicling the artists' youth, their mature work, the effects of international acclaim and the impact of the commercial art world. | Chinese Propaganda Posters. From the Collection of Michael Wolf.
MIN, ANCHEE, AND DUO DUO, AND STEFAN R. LANDSBERGER. Stock ID: 126507 239pp, colour illustrations, quarto, paperback. With his smooth, warm, red face which radiated light in all directions, Chairman Mao Zedong was a fixture in Chinese propaganda posters produced between the birth of the People's Republic in 1949 and the early 1980s. These infamous posters were, in turn, central fixtures in Chinese homes, railway stations, schools, journals, magazines, and just about anywhere else where people were likely to see them. Chairman Mao, portrayed as a stoic superhero (a.k.a. the Great Teacher, the Great Leader, the Great Helmsman, the Supreme Commander), appeared in all kinds of situations (inspecting factories, smoking a cigarette with peasant workers, standing by the Yangzi River in a bathrobe, presiding over the bow of a ship, or floating over a sea of red flags), flanked by strong, healthy, ageless men and "masculinized" women and children wearing baggy, sexless, drab clothing.
