China. Through the Lens of John Thomson (1868-1872). BEIJING WORLD ART MUSEUM.
Stock ID: 132438
Black and white photographic illustrations, 168 pages, text in English and Chinese, dustjacket. Born two years before the invention of daguerreotype and the birth of photography, Thomson first travelled to Asia in 1862 where he set up a professional photographic studio. The local culture and the people of Asia fascinated him, and in 1868 he made his second trip, this time settling in Hong Kong. Between 1868 and 1872, Thomson made extensive trips to Guangdong, Fujian, Beijing, China's northeast and down the Yangtse River, covering nearly 5000 miles. This exhibition catalogue is drawn from his time in these regions. These were the early days of photography when negatives were made on glass plates that had to be coated with emulsion before the exposure was made. A huge amount of cumbersome equipment had to be carried from place to place and with perseverance, great energy and stamina, Thomson managed to take a wide variety of images and themes, including landscapes, people, and architecture, domestic and street scenes. As a foreigner, his ability to gain access to photograph women is also remarkable. In China, Thomson excelled as a photographer in quality, depth and breadth, and in artistic sensibility. Stock ID: 94470
Map, colour and black and white photographic plates, xv + 144pp, bibliography, index, dustjacket, signed by author on half title-page. This book provides the first-ever comprehensive history of photography in Korea and identifies many previously unattributed images. Photographs from key private collections and museum archives in Europe America and Russia are collected in this volume, forming a unique anthology and giving insight into the cultural heritage of Korea. It includes the first photographs ever taken on Korean soil, by the famous war photographer Felice Beato. He accompanied the American squadron of five ships which landed in 1871 to attempt to open Korea to trade. His photographs show the fighting that ensued and the Korean people the Americans encountered. Other early photographs include royal portraits taken in the 1890's. Queen Min, the last queen of Korea, was assassinated by the Japanese in 1895 and the striking image presented here is the only known photograph of her. With a wide range of pictures by the photographic pioneers who first travelled to the country, including stereoscopes, glass slides and albumen prints - all reproduced in duotone- plus hand-tinted photographs reproduced in colour, readers will for the first time be able to see the people, the landscape, the town-life and the crafts and costumes of traditional Korea. Felice Beato. A Photographer on the Eastern Road. LACOSTE, ANNE.
Stock ID: 133889
Map, profusely illustrated with high quality reproductions of Felice Beato's extraordinary photographs. Large octavo hardback in dustjacket. This is a survey of one of the major but least recognised photographers of the 19th Century. In recent years Felice Beato (1832-1909) has come to be recognised as one of the major photographers of the 19th Century, yet there has been no general survey of his singular life and work. Born in Venice, Beato came of age in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople. As an apprentice in 1856, he photographed the sites of the Crimean War, thereby launching a long, remarkably adventurous career. Over the next half century he would follow in the wake of the British Empire: Egypt, Palestine, and Syria; India, where he photographed the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny; and China, where he chronicled the Second Opium War. He spent 30 years in Japan and Burma, where he was in the vanguard of Western photographers as they opened their borders to the West. This abundantly illustrated book captures Beato's entire oeuvre in both images and narrative and serves as a tribute to his extraordinary life. History of Photography in China 1842-1860. BENNETT, TERRY.
Stock ID: 130028
Map, xiv + 242 pages, black and white, and sepia photographic illustrations, index, notes, appendices, chronology, glossary, dustjacket. The first comprehensive history of the earliest years of photography in China, combining previously unpublished research with over 150 photographs, many of which are attributed and published here for the first time. Terry Bennett describes the way in which the discovery of photography in China was framed against the tumultuous backdrop of the Opium Wars, the Taiping Rebellion and the opening of numerous treaty ports to foreign trade. From 1842, when the use of a camera was first recorded in China, foreign and Chinese photographers captured the people, places and events of this unsettled period. They were professional portraitists, soldiers and pioneering amateurs, among them: Jules Itier; Pierre Rossier; Lo Yuanyou (the earliest-recorded Chinese commercial photographer); Felix Beato; and Milton Miller. The author, an acclaimed international authority on historical photographs from China, Japan and Korea, sheds new light on the unique historical value of these photographs. The images are drawn from institutional and private collections from all over the world. The text includes extensive documentary notes, valuable listings of early stereoviews of China and biographies of more than forty photographers working in China up to 1860. It also introduces important new detail on the life of Felix Beato. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 130028) ... more

Brush & Shutter. Early Photography in China. CODY, JEFFREY W., TERPAK, FRANCES.
Stock ID: 134927
Colour and black and white photographic illustrations, xi + 197 pages, square quarto, hardback. This title offers a lavishly illustrated exploration of the history of photography in China. Photography was introduced to China in the 1840s through the West's engagement in the Opium Wars and the subsequent reforms of Chinese statesmen. As a result, traditional modes of expression were dramatically transformed. Uncovered here is a captivating visual history of China during photography's first century. Chinese export painters learned and adapted the medium of photography by grafting the new technology onto traditional artistic conventions - employing both brush and shutter. Ultimately, both Chinese and Western photographers were witnesses to and agents of dynamic cultural change. The essays in this volume - which cover topics from the medium's evolution, commercialisation, and dissemination to how phot0graphy helped shape China's national image - shed new light on the birth of a medium.
