Bhupen Khakhar. HYMAN, TIMOTHY.
Stock ID: 69841
Profusely illustrated with the artists works in colour and black and white, 127pp, quarto, paperback. "This monograph presents a perspective on the art of Bhupen Khakhar (b.1934), one of the most significant Indian artists of this century. Born into a lower middle-class Gujarati family in central Bombay, Khakhar came to art only in his thirties. Trained as a chartered accountant, his early work dealt with popular iconic imagery and with the condition of 'the insignificant man', trapped in an unremarkable existence. Khakhar was subsequently involved, with several of his Baroda contemporaries, in the devising of a synthetic visual language that sought to reach a contemporary expression without forsaking links with tradition. His work from the mid-70s through the 80s dealt with a representation of the world that starting with the "insignificant" and the "diffident", went on to encompass a broad "panorama and plenitude" of the phenomenal world." Stock ID: 67800
Colour map of West Bengal, colour and black and white photographic illustrations, 232pp, bibliography, glossary, index, protected dustjacket, quarto. "Kalighat painting emerged from the changing world of nineteenth century Calcutta, with old and new images seemingly layered one upon another on a transparent plane. Traditionally inherited techniques, iconography, and artistic practices co-mingled with revivalistic Mughal court culture, Sanskrit drama, the proscenium stage, and swiftly churned out and circulated images from photo-studios and lithographic presses in the fast-growing urban centre, translating folk art forms into popular genres." From the Ocean of Painting. India's Popular Paintings 1589 to the Present. ROSSI, BARBARA WITH CONTRIBUTIONS BY ROY C. CRAVEN, JR. AND STUART CARY WELCH.
Stock ID: 88540
Maps, colour and black and white illustrations, xiv + 295pp, notes, bibliography, photographic credits, index, good copy in lightly shelf worn dustjacket, now protected. Quarto. "In this groundbreaking publication, Barbara Rossi, who has travelled and researched extensively in India, presents 101 works of extraordinary beauty representing twenty-one forms of popular painting and spanning 400 years. Based on a travelling exhibition that Rossi curated, From the Ocean of Painting is the first comprehensive overview of this diverse material and is organised around the primary functions these artworks serve, from ritual traditions that lead, through the act of painting, to spiritual and material benefits; to iconic and pilgrimage traditions that supply sacred pictures for worship; to narrative traditions that provide illustrations used in storytelling performances of epics and legends. This volume enables the readers to see the folk, tribal, and urban contexts in which these generally unknown forms of painting arose, and to gain a fuller understanding of the representative works, all of which are illustrated and given in-depth commentaries."
