Shibori. The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing.
WADA, YOSHIKO IWAMOTO, MARY KELLOGG RICE AND JANE BARTON. Stock ID: 44755 Profuse colour and black and white photographic and line illustrations, 303pp, appendices, bibliography, index, card covers, dustjacket, quarto. "Usually it is in response to the fact that a craft is being lost that the need for preserving and documenting it arises. The motivation behind this book is no exception, but the authors have gone far beyond simple documentation. Extensive research and experimentation have led to the revival here of shibori techniques that were once well known but have now been largely forgotten in Japan. In addition to more conventional techniques, the work of contemporary fiber artists in Japan and abroad in shibori textile art and wearable art is presented, to suggest the extent of the creative innovation possible. The 104 colour and 298 black-and-white plates include a photographic Gallery of Shibori Examples, based on Japan's largest collection of traditional shibori fabrics. Included also are a detailed guide to basic natural dyes used in Japan, the making and care of an indigo vat, and a list of suppliers in North America, as well as a glossary and bibliography. Now available in paperback, this full documentation of one of the world's most inventive and exciting dyeing techniques continues as a classic in the textile field." Publisher's description. Living Fabric. Weaving among the Nomads of Ladakh Himalaya.
AHMED, MONISHA. Stock ID: 59361 Maps, pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated with colour and black and white photographic illustrations and line drawings, 192pp, endnotes, appendix, glossary, bibliography, index, covers slightly bowed, dustjacket, quarto. "This is the first study of the tradition of weaving among the nomadic pastoralists of Rupshu, in eastern Ladakh. Weaving touches all aspects of life in Rupshu, where both women and men weave, each on a different loom. Local narrative states that the craft of weaving was bestowed upon Rupshu by the gods, and thus all feats related to it have a close connection to the sublime. This book documents and analyses the ways in which fibres, weaving, and textiles are symbolised, constructed, and experienced in Rupshu where themes such as gender, kinship, hierarchical and spatial relations find ready expression through the design and making of cloth. Through her work the author traces the relationship between livestock, weaving, social and symbolic structures in order to understand the multitude of contexts within which wool-oriented activities exist. Richly illustrated, this book will appeal to those with an interest in textiles, nomads, gender studies, and the Himalaya." Publisher's description. CHUNG, YOUNG YANG. Stock ID: 98785 Pictorial free endpapers, colour photographic illustrations throughout, 176pp, bibliography, oblong paperback. Young Yang Chung, master embroiderer and renowned scholar of East Asian textile arts, at last reveals not only the secrets of her craft and artistry, but also the colourful and vital history behind the ancient art of silk embroidery in Korea, China, and Japan. From the genesis of silk production to the elaborate symbolism behind the intricately stitched motifs, Chung provides a vivid description of the extraordinary cultures that gave birth to silk embroidery. According to Chung, it is essential to gain an understanding of the complex, centuries-old traditions that have shaped this magnificent art in order to fully appreciate the task embroiderers undertake with needle and thread. Chung guides readers through the fundamentals of her craft, showing readers how to "paint with a needle" as artisans in East Asia have for millennia. In the overview chapter, sixteen stitching techniques are described, and each is illustrated with a diagram and often with full-colour photographs. Then follows step-by-step instructions along with photographs, diagrams, and colour charts for nineteen how-to projects, each designed by Chung., The instructions have been written with beginners in mind, but highly advanced embroiderers will find plenty to challenge them as well. "Painting with a Needle" also has useful additions such as tips on how to get started, including advice about tools and materials; and a glossary of embroidery terms in three languages (Korean, Chinese, and Japanese) make this the ultimate book about the exquisite art of silk embroidery. The volumes are presented in a pictorial papercovered card slipcase which is shelf worn but still sturdy. There is some offsetting from 1 plate to the opposite page in volume one with minimal damage, tiny flaw in a blank area of another leaf, occasional slight adhering at gutter of a few leaves. A very good copy of a scarce title. A remarkable, in-depth work on the contemporary textile crafts of India. "The monograph first acquaints the reader with the location of various important centres on a map, and records the basic features of the warping processes adopted, the looms and raw materials used and the fabrics woven. It then documents the survey in detail. For the survey, the country has been divided into four main regions, namely the Northern region, Western region, Southern region and the Eastern and North Eastern regions together. The survey of each centre explains, as far as possible, all aspects of production. It includes an analysis of fabrics procured from the centres during the investigation, with photographic illustrations of each and with actual sample swatches wherever possible. Historical notes are also included in respect of each centre. In the analysis, structural particulars are given in detail as far as possible. The fineness of gold thread has been indicated in cotton counts, as adequate lengths of gold thread could not be obtained from the fabrics to enable the writer to indicate this in metres per ounce, without spoiling a large portion of the sample. Besides, the number of ends and picks per centimetre and the counts of yarn given in the analysis are the average figures of several test examination results. The nearest whole figure may be taken for all practical purposes. Eighteen samples of brocaded fabrics from the Calico Museum have been included among the plates to illustrate the continuity, and the changes that have taken place, in India's tradition of weaving such fabrics, in various parts of the country."
