Vietnamese Voices is based on Nathalie's doctoral dissertation at the University of Oxford, and is an analysis of Vietnamese Francophone novels, while Voyage of Hope grew out of a community project with the Australian Vietnamese Women's Welfare Association in Melbourne and is the first book to result from her work as an ARC Fellow. Voyage of Hope explores the experiences and journeys of Vietnamese women who arrived in Australia as part of the massive exodus of refugees from Vietnam following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. It reveals women's memories of life in Vietnam during the French colonial period and after, throughout the war and its aftermath, and what motivated them to leave their homeland and embark on an often dangerous journey to freedom a voyage of hope that eventually led them to a new life in Australia. About Nathalie Nguyen: Nathalie Nguyen holds an ARC Australian Research Fellowship at the Australian Centre, the University of Melbourne. After completing a B.A. (Hons) at Melbourne, she won a Commonwealth Scholarship to Oxford, where she obtained her doctorate. She taught French at the Universities of Adelaide and Newcastle before taking up her appointment at Melbourne in 2005.
