| Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon - Meet the Translator | |

| We are delighted to announce that Meredith McKinney, translator of the new Penguin Classics edition of The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, will speak at Asia Bookroom on March 1st.
A highly skilled translator, Dr McKinney spent 20 years in Japan (teaching language and literature at various universities and working on translations), before returning to Australia in 1998 to complete a PhD in medieval Japanese literature. Since then she has worked as a freelance literary translator. In 2000 she won the Japan-US Friendship Commission Prize for translation for a collection of short stories by contemporary writer Furui Yoshikichi. Dr McKinney also has just completed a translation of a new novel by Furui and a retranslation of a Natsume Soseki novel for Penguin Classics. This event is a must for anyone interested in Japanese literature or Japan in earlier days. When: 6 - 8pm, Thursday March 1st. Where: Asia Bookroom, Lawry Place, Macquarie.
