Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon - Meet the Translator
Thu 1 Mar 2007
We are delighted to announce that Meredith McKinney, translator of the new Penguin Classics edition of The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, will speak at Asia Bookroom on March 1st.

A highly skilled translator, Dr McKinney spent 20 years in Japan (teaching language and literature at various universities and working on translations), before returning to Australia in 1998 to complete a PhD in medieval Japanese literature. Since then she has worked as a freelance literary translator. In 2000 she won the Japan-US Friendship Commission Prize for translation for a collection of short stories by contemporary writer Furui Yoshikichi. Dr McKinney also has just completed a translation of a new novel by Furui and a retranslation of a Natsume Soseki novel for Penguin Classics.

This event is a must for anyone interested in Japanese literature or Japan in earlier days.

When: 6 - 8pm, Thursday March 1st.
