Strange Flowers on the Diplomatic Vine
Wed 16 May 2007
Asia Bookroom is delighted to host the launch of Neil Manton's new book Strange Flowers on the Diplomatic Vine: U.S. Detainees in Cambodia. This book tells, for the first time, of the rarely known period in Australia's diplomatic history when we represented the interests of the world powerhouse - the United States of America - in one of the smallest and poorest countries in the world, Cambodia. As part of this representation of interest from 1965-70, the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh became responsible for the welfare of 23 U.S. servicemen shot down in, or arrested in Cambodia or released into Cambodian custody by the Vietcong as a 'sideshow' to the Vietnam War.

Strange Flowers on the Diplomatic Vine tells the story of these servicemen, how they came into Cambodia and what happened to bring about their release and repatriation, from the official records of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, from Neil's personal records and recollections from his time in Pnom Penh, and from the memories of the service men themselves.
