World Renowned Chinese Translators Speak
Wed 20 Jun 2007
Asia Bookroom is honoured to be the host for a very special occasion.
Professor David Hawkes, Emeritus Professor of Chinese at Oxford and Professor John Minford, Professor of Chinese at the ANU, will take part in an "In Conversation" at Asia Bookroom on Wednesday June 20.

These two leading Chinese scholars have, among their many contributions to the field of translation, brought Cao Xueqin's 18th-century masterpiece 'The Story of the Stone' (sometimes translated as The Dream of the Red Chamber) to a new audience through their 5 volume edition published in the Penguin Classics series. Their highly regarded translation, of what is often said to be the greatest novel in Chinese literature, is now considered the standard edition.

Professor Hawkes translated the first 80 chapters (volumes 1 - 3) and Professor Minford the final 40 chapters (volumes 4 and 5). This translation, which took between them over 11 years to complete, is a stunning work of world literature and a magnificent achievement of translation. Professor Hawkes is only in Canberra for a short stay so the opportunity to hear these eminent scholars speaking together, is for most of us, an opportunity which is unlikely to ever be repeated.

When: 6 - 8pm Wednesday June 20, 2007
Where: Asia Bookroom, Lawry Place, Macquarie. ACT (adjacent to the Jamison Centre) Ph 6251 5191
