| Historians "In Conversation" at Asia Bookroom | |
| Wed 4 Jul 2007 | |
| We are really thrilled to report that eminent historians Professor Tessa Morris-Suzuki, Professor of Japanese History in the College of Asia and the Pacific, ANU and Professor Carol Gluck, George Sansom Professor of History at Columbia University, will be "in conversation" at Asia Bookroom on Wednesday July 4th.
Their discussion will include their recent writings on modern Japan, including Professor Morris-Suzuki's new book Exodus to North Korea: Shadows from Japans Cold War, and Professor Gluck's recent writings on memory and history in Japan. Exodus to North Korea uses newly declassified documents to explore a major forgotten tragedy in the Cold War history of Japan and Korea. Carol Glucks internationally acclaimed writings, including Japan's Modern Myths, Showa: the Japan of Hirohito and Asia in Western and World History, place problems of Japanese history, memory and historical responsibility in an international comparative context. As well as discussing their shared interest in Japanese (and more broadly, East Asian) history and memory, the two historians will also talk about the issues of communicating history to general as well as academic readers, and to audiences in various different countries. This is definitely an evening not to be missed! When: 6 - 8pm Wednesday July 4. Where: Asia Bookroom, Lawry Place, Macquarie. (adjacent to the Jamison Centre) RSVP: For catering purposes to Asia Bookroom by Tuesday July 3. All very welcome to this free event. |
