Indigenous Literacy Day
Wed 5 Sep 2007
Indigenous Literacy Day, September 5, 2007 - The goal is to raise $100,000!

All Australians are invited to be a part of the inaugural Indigenous Literacy Day, Wednesday September 5, 2007. Indigenous Literacy Day is a single event to help raise urgently needed funds to address the literacy crisis in remote Indigenous communities. Can you imagine a world without books and reading? For those of us whose lives are so integrally linked to books and reading, the question seems almost ridiculous.

For many remote Indigenous Australians the question is redundant simply because they cannot read, not only books but everyday items like the newspaper, medication labels, recipes, safety instructions, bank statements, election ballots – the list is endless.

What is the Indigenous Literacy Project?
The Indigenous Literacy Project is a partnership between The Fred Hollows Foundation, the Australian Publishers Association (APA), and the Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) that grew from the very successful 2006 Australian Readers’ Challenge (ARC). Our goal is to help raise urgently needed funds for literacy for remote Indigenous communities.

Visit http://www.worldwithoutbooks.org/index.htm for full details.

Asia Bookroom is one of the participating booksellers. We will be giving 10% of our takings on September 5 to the Indigenous Literacy Project. Please help us support this important project.
