Does The Language You Speak Define Your Emotions? - Anna Wierzbicka Speaks at Asia Bookroom
Thu 14 Feb 2008
~~Does The Language You Speak Define Your Emotions?~~

Join us to hear Professor Anna Wierzbicka explain how the language we speak defines our emotions. If your first language has no expression for such common concepts in English as "frustration" or "being reasonable" and the ideas you are used to expressing in your mother language have no linguistic outlet in English, how easy is it to live happily in Australian society?

These and many other questions are faced daily by a significant proportion of our population. We invite you to explore the fascinating and important world of linguistics and multi-culturalism.

Anna Wierzbicka is the Professor of Linguistics at the Australian National University. She is the author of many books including "Emotions Across Languages and Cultures: Diversity and Universals" and most recently, "Translating Lives. Living with Two Languages and Cultures" co-authored with Mary Besemeres.

We hope you will join us to hear what Professor Wierzbicka has to say. It is an important message for everyone living in our society should have a chance to hear and consider.
