SUN SHUYUN - A YEAR IN TIBET

Sun Shuyun, author of 'The Long March' and 'Ten Thousand Miles without a Cloud', grew up in China and has always been fascinated by Tibet and Buddhism. So in July 2006, when she had the chance to work for a year in a remote town in Tibet, Sun Shuyun seized it to record first-hand how ordinary Tibetans live.

In 'A Year in Tibet', Sun Shuyun explores in intimate detail the lives of a shaman and his family, three monks, a village doctor, a Party worker, a hotel manager, a builder and a rickshaw driver. Through them she captures the tensions between Chinese and Tibetans, between an ancient and an alien culture, between faith and science, tradition and modernity.

'A Year in Tibet' is a book with a difference. Foreigners can rarely observe Tibet so closely; but as a sympathetic Chinese Sun was able to unlock powerful stories that shed a penetrating light on the recent troubles. And, unusually, a realistic Chinese voice calls for better understanding of a remarkable people, as they try to carve out their own path, often against the odds, often with joy and hope.
