| What would you do if you discovered that two children you had adopted and loved for the past eight years had been stolen from their birth mother?
Julia and Barry Rollings are parents to eight children, six of whom were adopted from overseas. Eight years after the adoption of their two youngest, they discovered that Akil and Sabila were not orphans or willingly relinquished as Julia and Barry had believed, but stolen away from their mother while she slept and sold — by their father. As they struggled to come to terms with such devastating news, Julia and Barry had to decide what to do. Should they accept the advice that ‘you adopt the child, not the family’? Perhaps not tell the children until they are older? Or perhaps never? But Julia Rollings is not one to take the easy road. With her family’s support, she decided to try to reunite Akil and Sabi, then 13 and 12, with their birth mother, Sunama. Powerful and moving, Love Our Way is not only the story of Julia’s amazing family but also their search to find Sunama. It was a journey that had the potential for a disastrous outcome, but instead led to an unforgettable experience that has expanded and enriched the family in many ways. At the heart of this story is a mother whose courage, unwavering honesty, seemingly boundless capacity for love, and plain good sense, inspires us to see new meaning in the word family. About the author Julia Rollings is a Canberra-based writer with extensive personal and community experience in intercountry adoption. She has recently been appointed as one of 16 advisers to the government on a peak adoption group. She and her husband, Barry, have eight children, six of whom were adopted from overseas. Julia works for a community-based child and family service. When: 6pm, Thursday October 2 Where: Asia Bookroom, Lawry Pl Macquarie RSVP: Wednesday October 1 to 6251 5191 or books@AsiaBookroom.com |
