Pictorial Cambodian Textiles - Gillian Green Speaking at Asia Bookroom
Thu 4 Dec 2008
Join us for the Canberra celebration of Gillian Green's new book 'Pictorial Cambodian Textiles'.

Gillian Green, the author of the prize winning 'Traditional Cambodian Textiles' and now, her latest book, 'Pictorial Cambodian Textiles', will be speaking at Asia Bookroom on Thursday December 4 at 6pm.

Gill is a renowned authority on the subject of Cambodian textiles. She has studied the Cambodian textile and weaving tradition for the past 15 years and has lectured and published widely on this subject. Her first book 'Traditional Cambodian Textiles' published in 2003 was awarded the RL Shep prize for a book on "ethnic" textiles by the Textile Society of America. She has an MA from ANU and an Honorary position in the Department of Art History at the University of Sydney.

In late 2006 Gill had the opportunity to examine the antique textiles languishing in the collection of the National Museum of Cambodia. Amazingly about 70 textiles had survived in the Museum's basement storage areas despite severe challenges to their longevity not least the ravages of climate and the Khmer Rouge occupation. But they were not the 'ikat' patterned textiles she expected to find, instead examples of a completely different category. Their motifs presented an intriguing puzzle and this presentation outlines the circuitous pathway her research followed to finally reveal their likely identity.

Gill is an expert and very interesting speaker - for anyone interested in textiles or Cambodia this evening is a must!
