Introducing Contemporary Japanese Poetry
Wed 4 Mar 2009
Introducing Contemporary Japanese Poetry Through the Work of Tokyo Writer and Performance Poet, Mariko Kitakubo

The short form lyric called 'tanka' has a history of over 1,300 years in Japan. Today, as in ancient times, it remains the fundamental vessel for Japanese poetic expression. In the 21st century, tanka verse is still composed by tens of thousands of people using the traditional framework of 5 phrases
totalling 31 syllables, although now in the modern language and with contemporary themes.

Over the last 40 years there has been an escalating trend in the 'Western' world toward the writing of tanka style poetry in English. This in turn has led to an increased interest in reading translations of Japanese tanka.

Mariko Kitakubo is a popular contemporary poet, and Amelia Fielden a well-known translator of modern tanka. Together they produced the bilingual anthology of 300 poems called 'Cicada Forest',which was published in Tokyo in 2008.

Cicada Forest will be introduced to Canberra at the Asia Bookroom at 6pm on 4th March, 2009. Amelia will give a brief explanation of the tanka form and its background. Wearing traditional kimono Mariko and Amelia will then perform, in Japanese and English, a large selection of poems from Cicada Forest to musical accompaniment by Rupert Summerson playing the shakuhachi.
