| Meet the Author: Siew Siang Tay on 'Handpicked' | |
| Sat 16 May 2009 | |
| Asia Bookroom is delighted to announce that Siew Siang Tay will visit Canberra especially to speak at Asia Bookroom on her way from her home in Adelaide to the Sydney Writers Festival!
We hope that you will join us at 4pm on the afternoon of Saturday May 16 to hear her talk about her new novel 'Handpicked'. Set in Renmark 'Handpicked' is a subtle and sensitive exploration of the world of the mail order bride. It is also a compelling observation of words and actions‚ expectations and consequences‚ truth and happiness. In 2007 Siang was awarded the Varuna-HarperCollins Manuscript Development Award which led to the publication of 'Handpicked'. Although 'Handpicked' is Siang's first published novel she has already had a number of short stories published. Visit her very attractive website (click the 'more details' button at the foot of this page to visit her site) to read some of her stories and to learn more about Siang. Some early reviews of 'Handpicked' have said: "...original, fast-paced and gripping..." "Handpicked is original, fast-paced and gripping, engendering sympathy for each of its mismatched protagonists. Its absorbing story is a realistic look at the hazards of romance and a cautionary look at victims of abuse. Hard to put down, it is even harder to forget." Janet Brown, 'thingsasian' website "...Handpicked is a well-crafted, touching and intelligent novel..." Gillian Dooley, Flinders University, for Writers Radio, Radio Adelaide, 5 March 2009 'Handpicked' is also the June Asia Book group book so you may care to join us for both Siew Siang Tay's visit to Asia Bookroom and then come along again on June 11 to join a discussion about the book and the issues it raises. When: 4pm Saturday May 16 Where: Asia Bookroom, Lawry Place, Macquarie. ACT 2614 RSVP: Friday May 15 to 62515191 or books@AsiaBookroom.com Admission by gold coin donation. All money raised will go towards the excellent work done by NTA East Indonesia Aid |
