| With the publication this month of the 10th Edition of Milton Osborne's Southeast Asia: An Introductory History, the book has now been in print continuously for thirty years since its first printing in 1979. In that time it has expanded from a book of 205 pages to its current 351 pages, but it retains its essentially introductory character which has made it the most widely used starting point for study of the region's history. It has now been translated into Japanese, Thai, Korean and Cambodian, and is currently being translated into Chinese.
All of this remains remarkable to the author who never planned to write such a book. Indeed, the history of how he came to do so involves a boozy lunch in Soho and the probable breaching of Singapore¹s laws on assembly. Over the years it has been pirated in both Thailand and Cambodia and incurred the concern of the Ministry of Cults in Thailand because of its cover picture. Milton Osborne is now based in Sydney and is a Visiting Fellow at the Lowy institute for International Policy, where his latest Lowy Paper is The Mekong: River Under Threat. In addition to Southeast Asia he is the author of nine other books. Asia Bookroom is thrilled to host this very important celebration. Join us!
