Growing Up Bilingual

There is growing evidence to suggest that early exposure to another language can have long-lasting effects on a child's mastery of the language. Children brought up in homes where two languages are spoken are able to achieve fluency in both languages without any significant delays in learning either one or the other.

Nowadays too, there are increasing numbers of parents wishing to expose their children to another language because of the importance of being able to communicate in a language other than the dominant language of our culture. Preschools often include other languages in their programmes. There is a window of opportunity at this age during which children pick up another language almost effortlessly.

Whether your home is a bilingual one or you simply want your children to experience learning a second language, there are materials available that can support what you are doing to assist them in this. Our selection is a very small sample of our wide range and many of the books and materials are available in other languages. Feel free to contact us for futher information.

You may also be interested to know that there will be a free seminar - Raising Children in More than One Language - for parents, grandparents, early childhood and preschool workers, teachers, and others interested in bilingual education on Sunday 21 February (International Mother Language Day) from 1.30-4.30pm at Building 2, University of Canberra, Bruce. Bookings are essential: phone Marina on 6201 2483 or email Mandy.Scott@canberra.edu.au

Incidentally, International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by
UNESCO over 10 years ago. It states, "Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue."

What better reason to get your children started on that second language right now?
