Black and white line illustrations, 400pp, very good ex library copy bound in slightly marked and occasionally faded half calf, raised bands on the spine, gilt library stamp on upper board, endpapers a little foxed, some very light occasional foxing in contents but generally the contents are very clean and sound. Observations of late 19th century Japan. Written in chatty style much interesting information (such as the following quote) of a world which has disappeared is imparted "The shibu thus rubbed up with water makes a very strong paste or varnish, and is used for umbrellas, tarpaulin, and other things.
