1944.
Double sided coloured folded map showing Tokyo, surrounding coast and the surrounding sea on one side and Osaka again with coast and surrounding sea on the other. Legend shows roads (in 3 classes), railroads, cities and villages divided into population size, submarine cable, lighthouses, depth contours, anchorages etc. The silk sheet measures approximately 59cm height by 65cm width. Faint browning in one or two places but otherwise very good. Maps such as these were issued to airmen during the World War II. They were sewn into their jackets so that in the event of an enforced landing over enemy territory the servicemen would be able to avoid capture and make their way to safe territory. Evasion maps were light and durable due to being printed on silk rather than paper. Fascinating for the detail they record they also bring into sharp focus the risks that were taken by these young airmen. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 122372)
