Black and white wood engravings, many full page by Auguste Borget, one illustration printed on a red page, vi + 396pp. Some foxing throughout, watered silk endpapers, half leather binding, spine gilt, raised bands, cloth covered boards. Extremities of leather rubbed in a few small places. A sound and complete copy of the scarce first edition. According to Cordier this edition was actually published in 1844 (rather than 1845 printed on the title page) although the text was originally published in parts from November 1843. This book is full of lively impressions of China - includes comment on Macao, opium, Shanghai, religion, the first Opium War/Anglo-Chinese War etc by an Old China Hand. Text in French. Cordier 83.
