1863.
Second edition.
Folding colour map, large black and white folding Japanese play bill, colour frontispiece and 4 other colour plates, black and white illustrations of which 3 are folding, iv + 287pp. Ex-library copy with 19th century library label on front paste down and two stamps on title page. Some foxing including a few spots on the plates, folding Japanese play bill little torn along a few folds, original blind stamped red cloth worn particularly markedly on spine. Head and tail of spine worn with minor loss, decorative spine gilt worn and dull. Lively reminiscences of travel in Japan and China in 1859-61 told in a somewhat lighthearted but nonetheless informative manner. The author spent nearly a year in consular service in Japan before moving to Tien Tsin. Against a background of recounting events of the period he makes interesting observations on things Japanese and to a lesser extent Chinese. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 127296)
