Single sided silk map shows Predominant Surface Wind Direction, Constancy and Average Speed. June, July, August, September, October. Ocean Currents May - September, Surface winds May Only. Frayed edges. Maps such as these were issued to defence force personnel during conflict. They were sewn into their jackets so that in the event of an enforced landing over enemy territory the servicemen would be able to avoid capture and make their way to safe territory. Evasion maps were light and durable due to being printed on silk or fabric rather than paper. Fascinating for the detail they record they also bring into sharp focus the risks that were taken by these young men. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 127390)
