Detailed double sided silk map. Chart No. C42 Mindoro Island, shows Palawan Passage in the South China Sea, Sulu Sea and Mindoro Strait. Mindoro, Calamian Group including Busuanga Island, Cabulauan Islands, Cuyo Islands. Chart No. C42 Samar Island, Sibuyan Sea, Visayan Sea, Samar Sea, Camotes Sea, Leyte Gulf, Mindanao Sea, Panay Sea, South China Sea. Including Payay, Samar, Negros, Cebu, Leyte, Bohoi. Some brown stains. Maps such as these were issued to defence force personnel during conflict. They were sewn into their jackets so that in the event of an enforced landing over enemy territory the servicemen would be able to avoid capture and make their way to safe territory. Evasion maps were light and durable due to being printed on silk or fabric rather than paper. Fascinating for the detail they record they also bring into sharp focus the risks that were taken by these young men. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 127393)
