Culture and Development in Southeast Asia is a collection of papers based on original field research taken by the individual authors in the region of Southeast Asia. Five of the chapters in this volume report findings from researches carried out among different ethnic groups in Thailand, including: Lahu, Lue, Palaung, Thai and Black Tai. The remaining chapters are based on research among: Toraya of Sulawesi, Indonesia; Kalinga of Luzon, the Philippines; Giay, Hmong, and Dao of Lao Cai Province, Vietnam; and Nung Phan Slinh of Lang Son Province, Vietnam. The central organizing theme of the volume is, of course, "culture and development;" not as isolated and separate concepts or phenomena, but rather convergence and interaction. In other words, how development is enmeshed with and by the cultural, and vice versa. There are also several sub- themes that run throughout the volume's constituent chapters. These sub-themes include : how larger regional, national, and global currents engage with and impinge upon local realities; issues of nationalism, national identities and the integration of diverse groups into larger national communities; how identity is shaped by public, academic, political, and development discourse and how various agents, such as, market forces, state policy, and development programs bear upon the formation, maintenance, and transformation of ethnic identities.
