60 black and white wood engravings, attractive chromolithograph frontis showing "A Winter Scene in Japan", xvi + 645pp + 2ads, appendices, pictorial upper cover gilt, ownership details neatly written at upper corner of front free endpaper, upper hinge starting, original cloth worn with a little loss at corners, head and tail of spine and 4cms at upper joint. Text is clean and sound and the cloth still bright. A good copy. A history, told in the format of a personal narrative, of the proceedings of the Special Mission to China and Japan, which extended over a period of two years.
