58 pages of text, 50 leaves of collotype plates showing 171 objects. Bound in Japanese style, floral endpapers printed in gold with applied black lacquer decoration. Inscribed "Mr and Mrs H.W. Bird with best regards J.O" (apparently James Orange) one prelim. Binding worn with considerable loss to cloth, cloth on lower cover removed leaving slightly torn paper covered boards, some insect damage spine and loss of cloth, attractive Japanese design endpapers little creased, occasional creases and small tears on browned tissue guards, signature of H.W. Bird and dated 1910 on slightly browned first blank. Contents clean and sound. Quarto. Most uncommon. This rare catalogue records James Orange's collection of Japanese lacquer which he built up over a period of 25 years in the late 19th century. James Orange, a resident of Hong Kong is best known for his work "The Chater Collection: Pictures Relating to China, Hong Kong, Macao, 1655-1860, with Historical & Descriptive Letterpress". This catalogue gives details of many very rare pieces that he purchased over many visits to Japan. In the introduction he thanks "My Friends T.B. Glover, B.H. Chamberlain and J. Conder, old residents in Japan [who] have assisted me in obtaining many pieces from private owners and old-fashioned dealers not accessible to the ordinary "globe-trotter"....
