Endpaper maps, black and white photographic illustrations, frontispiece, xii + 284pp, index, paperback, lightly soiled covers, very good copy. First published 1926. A Victorian naturalist's account of the customs and beliefs of the various peoples who inhabit the northern part of Borneo. The author was recruited to the Sarawak Civil Service in 1884 and proved to be an enthusiastic (if somewhat unreliable) anthropologist during his twenty-three years of service in Borneo. He may be described as one of the last of the great Victorian amateurs. Despite its flaws in approach, Natural Man remains a fascinating work of cultural anthropology which today's reader will find as engrossing as his predecessor did sixty years ago.
