John Bell, a Scottish doctor, was in the service of the Russian state for 8 years during which he journeyed with embassies to Siberia and Persia and Peking. First published as a self-contained section in his very popular book "Travels from St Petersburg in Russia to Diverse Parts of Asia" in 1763. In "Journey to Pekin" he relates his experiences in China giving a very interesting description of the Chinese court of the day.
