First edition.
Based on the book by Itsuro Hattori. Endpaper maps, black and white photographic illustrations, 248pp, some extremities wear to dustjacket, endpapers patchily foxed, light foxing to edges, still a good copy in protected dustjacket. This book is the first comprehensive reconstruction of the first Japanese embassy to the USA. One of the primary sources for this book is the diary of one of the two principal ambassadors, Muragaki, who wrote "these foreigners did not earn their name of barbarians for nothing" in reaction to some of the rituals and festivities of welcome.
