Hurst and Blackett.
1855.
2 volumes. Volume I: 3 full page lithographs, x + 334pp. Volume II: 3 full page lithographs, vii + 372pp. Attractive half calf binding, marbled paper covered boards, edges and endpapers. Ex parliamentary library with 4 light stamps in each volume on last page and prelims and no library marking on the binding. A little occasional light wear binding. The text is very clean although foxing is present on the plates and leaves of either side of the plates. Blackmer 1035. A very readable account of Middle Eastern and North African travel. The first volume describes the author's travels in Egypt, including a journey along the Nile, Thebes and Nubia and the second his travels to Petra, Jerusalem, through Lebanon to Damascus. Lowth brings to life his travels. His engaged and rather more open minded attitude is a contrast to the views expressed by some travellers of the period. His enjoyment of everything he encounters comes through in his descriptions, such as the incident he recounts of the banking transaction in Damascus (when his withdrawal of 3000 piasters was carefully counted out two by two..)
