2 volumes, thick quarto. Endpapers lightly browned, a little borer damage first leaves, fortunately almost entirely confined to the margins. Bound in Western style blue cloth binding, lettered and decorated in gilt, some insect damage cloth of both volumes, the upper cover of volume II more heavily affected. Ex library, dark blue paint over old library markings on spine, head and tail of both volumes worn with some loss, fore edges a little foxed. Although the binding is worn and marked the contents are very good and clean and the bindings are still sound. "This work is classified in the same way as the Hsu Wen Hsien T'ung K'ao, Ch'in Ting, the period covered extending from the beginning of the Ch'ing dynasty to 1785. Some items in the earlier work which dealt with matters no longer significant in the Ch'ing Period were not included in this work, and a number of new items were added in which subjects such as the Eight Banner system are discussed. The material is, to a certain extent, the same in all of the Huang Ch'ao San T'ung, for they were compiled to perpetuate the tradition and style of the San T'ung rather than to make available new material. In comparing the three, the material in the Huang Ch'ao T'ung Tien is the most compact and that in the Huang Ch'ao T'ung Chih the most scattered; the Huang Ch'ao Wen Hsien T'ung K'ao is the best, for it is the most intelligble and the most convenient to use. Unfortunately its so-called critical notes are of little significance, as it was not possible to be critical in dealing with the dynasty during which it was compiled."
