Travel through the desert over the ages, covering ancient and medieval trade, merchant, private and hajj caravans, postal service, and mechanical transport. Extensive reading of the writings of the desert travellers together with four years work in the field went into writing this book. During her field work Dr Grant discussed problems personally with eminent explorers and surveyors of the desert, with Ministers of the Egyptian government, and with such authorities as Hajii Selim Sawwaf of Damascus, T.E.
