Black and white illustrations, unpaginated, chronology, elegant bookplate tipped in title page, wrappers trifle soiled, square octavo. Catalogue for an exhibition celebrating Australia's Bicentenary. "In the graphic arts of 20th century Japan, developing upon distinctive and unrivalled wood-block print traditions, the outstanding figure is Munakata Shiko. Having studied Western oil painting but thereafter returning to wood-block printing, Munakata was inevitably influenced by Western graphic styles. However, rather than these influences dominating his work they become absorbed to yet further enrich and enliven those traditions which were more truly close to his heart: Zen Buddhism and Japanese folk design."
