"Though the main portion of the Journal is devoted, as might be expected, to an account of the Embassy and its adventures in Siam and Cochin China, Crawfurd gives an interesting and lengthy description of Penang in 1821, and also of Malacca and Singapore. In all, some three chapters are given up to the Straits Settlements, that on Singapore, where he served as Resident from 1823 to 1826, being the most important, and written after the main text."
