Children's picture book, illustrated in colour by the author, dustjacket. In her time, Alexandra David-Neel was the most famous woman in France. She had travelled extensively in China and Tibet and, in 1923, was the first Western woman ever to enter the forbidden capital of Tibet, Lhasa. Alexandra was a self-taught Buddhist scholar and spoke Tibetan flawlessly. She spent a year in the Himalayas, living in a cave like a hermit. She even disguised herself as a beggar and travelled in the company of a young lama; later she adopted him as a son. And she did it all as a mature woman - Alexandra was in her mid-fifties when she arrived in Lhasa. Suitable for middle and senior primary. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 99687)
