This account by Lord Roberts of Kandahar of his distinguished service in India was enormously popular, leading to its publication in many editions including in a single volume edition. This immensely readable work is a window into the time and place. Discussion of the Mutiny, the influence and concerns of the Great Game together with comment on the Indians and British with whom he worked are clearly evident. Lord Roberts's views were very much that of a man of his time and position as is clearly shown in this comment from the preface "It is difficult for people who know nothing of Natives to understand and appreciate the value they set on cherished customs, peculiar idiosyncrasies, and fixed prejudices, all of which must be carefully studied by those who are placed in the position of their Rulers, if the suzerain Power is to keep their respect and gain their gratitude and affection." However his love of the India is evident as demonstrated in this comment from the preface explaining why he wrote this book "I have known this wonderful land of my adoption and its interesting peoples would be useful to my countrymen." A classic work of British India.
