Please help Asia Bookroom bring Literacy to Children in Nepal by funding a teacher's salary

This is the 9th year Asia Bookroom has collected donations to fund the salary of a teacher in a remote area of Nepal. Once again we are supporting Teacher Llami Sherpa, shown at right with her students at Shree Sagarmatha School in Bung, in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal.

I know this has been another difficult year for so many people in Australia and across the world. Nepal also continues to be badly affected by COVID. Lockdowns greatly impact on education in Nepal too, only instead of remote lessons over Zoom, Teacher Llami has had to make lots of home visits! See Llami and her students in the photograph here.

Any donation you make will make a big difference to Llami and her students. As in previous years each donation will be represented on our Christmas tree by a decoration representing different amounts - see below for some suggested donations. With your help we hope to have a brightly coloured, fully decorated Christmas tree by December 25th, symbolising another year of funding for "our" teacher Llami Sherpa.

See a report on Llami's year at the foot of this email.

See below for the 4 ways you can make your donation.

As I write this the Christmas tree in Asia Bookroom stands empty. However with each donation the tree will fill with colour and the days of classroom education will grow for the children in this Nepalese class in 2021.

Together we can educate a class full of Nepalese children! Asia Bookroom customers and staff did it last year, raising over $10,000  which covered Llami Sherpa's wages for 2020, provided a uniform and some training and, because we exceeded the target, the extra money went towards teacher training and equipment. This was a great result - thank you to all who donated!!

This is how our Christmas tree "works":
A donation of $10 will pay Llami's wages for approximately half a day and a silver coloured Christmas decoration will be placed on our Christmas tree to symbolise your donation
A red decoration represents $20 and pays her wages for approximately 1 day

A blue decoration represents $50 and pays her wages for approximately 2.5 days
A green decoration represents $100 and pays her wages for approximately 5 days
A gold decoration represents $200 and pays her wages for approximately 10 days
Or you may give another amount - every donation is appreciated - great or small. For example $5 still makes a big difference
Thank you for your support - your donation will change the course of a Nepalese child's life.

More about "our" teacher Llami Sherpa

The teacher we are sponsoring, Llami Sherpa, is in her 30s. Apart from being their teacher Llami is also an excellent role model for the young girls in school. Unfortunately Nepalese girls often do not finish their schooling because of family demands to help out in the home and sometimes these girls have to marry, even at a very young age.

We have just received a "report card" about Llami's progression as a teacher (Llami pictured here on the left with a fellow teacher)

Llami continues to excel as a Classrooms in the Clouds sponsored teacher at Shree Sagarmatha school in rural Nepal, showing true dedication to her role during what has been another challenging year for the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The spread of the Delta variant caused a second lockdown between April and August resulting in further school closures which left most children across the country unable to access their education. During that time Llami, along with CITC’s team of sponsored teachers, once again found ways to reach their students to support them with their learning including conducting home visits and engaging with parents.  Llami is developing very well in her enhanced role as Early Years Leader at the school and is always keen to share her best practice amongst her teaching peers.  She takes pride in providing the best possible learning environment for her students and maintains a beautiful classroom full of bright and engaging displays.

Llami has been working hard to enhance her professional development, engaging with regular online team meetings, working closely with her mentor and has recently attended training workshops covering lesson planning and team building.

Thanks to the wonderful support from the friends of Asia Bookroom, Llami continues to make a direct impact to the learning outcomes of children in the village of Bung as well as acting as an outstanding female role model.’

More information about the project can be found here http://www.citcnepal.org/index.php/shree-sagarmatha-hss-bung

Your support means a teacher who the government can't afford to pay, Llami Sherpa, can teach and therefore that more Nepalese children can go to school thus achieving their dream of getting away from the grinding poverty their parents experienced.

For more information visit the Classrooms in the Clouds website.
Their site includes a piece written by "our" teacher, Llami Sherpa, on how much she and her students benefited from the teacher training she undertook some time ago.

With our thanks from all of us at Asia Bookroom
