Kojima Akiko won the crown at the 8th Miss Universe World Tournament held in 1959 (Showa 34), becoming the first Asian woman to win the award. Ichinose, who was the Japanese representative in the 1959 Miss World competition, is celebrated as representing "healthy beauty". There is an article on the Japanese national Miss Universe competition, and double page spreads in which each of the previous Japanese competitors in the international competition recalls her experiences. An article by a university professor explains that the physique of Japanese women has improved, as can be seen if you see them next to their mothers. He attributes this mainly to the "liberated life" that they have led in the post-war period. The special issue also features a list of Japanese women competing to represent their country in the 1960 Miss World and Miss University contests, complete with vital statistics.
