Tokyo: 團々社, Meiji 14. [June 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th1881]. Stock ID #163501
5 issues in original wrappers, illustrated in black and white. Some light even browning and occasional spotting, small holes punched in margin, upper cover of one issue detached. 24 x 17cm. Good copies. Kibi dango 驥尾團子 was a sister journal of Maru maru chinbun 團團珍聞. Due to Maru maru chinbun's on-going criticism of the government it was often suppressed with fines, arrests, and prohibition of sale and so the publisher started Kibi dango in October 1878 just in case Maru maru chinbun was banned. Kibi dango had a relatively short life with its final issue published in 1883.
The cover caricature of No.139 is titled "Dissection of People's Dog 明犬 [a pun for 'civil rights' 民権] ". Kibi dango usually supported the Movement for Civil Rights and Freedom, but here it criticises the movement's lax and ineffective aspects with the use of puns. A caricature in the same issues criticises the government's crackdown on free speech. The image shows a crucifixion scene of a person with a mouth, and characters jiyū 自由, instead of a head against a cross made up of two writing brushes. The image is titled "Execution of the Mouth".
