Colour pictorial map endpapers, illustrated with striking colour double page illustrations throughout. pp. Some light wear dustjacket. 26.5 x19 cm. Good copy. Edited by the Army Information Section of Japan's military command, this children's book about the Malay Campaign includes vivid colour illustrations by illustrations by Mukai Junkichi 向井潤吉 and Miyamoto Saburō 宮本三郎. The introduction stresses that it is important to instill in children a correct consciousness about the war. The text, which seems to be aimed at upper level school students, is written by multiple authors. It begins by describing the landing of Japanese forces at Kota Bharu and Songkhla in Thailand, and goes on to describe the Battle of Kampal, and the advance of Japanese forces to the Malacca Straits. The narrative takes the story up to the surrender of Singpore, which is discussed and illustrated on the final page. The illustrations are relatively vivid depictions of the violence of war, and the message is one of determination to fight to the death for the Emperor.
