Mid1930s Takashimaya catalogue featuring home appliances and kitchen utensils ideal for the newly married couple wishing to set up their first household. These appliances were not for the average income earner, rather it is aimed at the type of affluent family where the parents would not hesitate spending money to set up a new household for their daughters. A complete set of177 items of tableware, kitchen and laundry utensils can be purchased for 50 yen and other more expensive items are available individually. Interestingly, electric vacuum cleaners, electric washing machines, and refrigerators, all from Toshiba are included. It is interesting to reflect that nearly a hundred years later the firm still continues in production in this area, similarly the Takashimaya Department store is still one of the major department stores in Japan today.
Although the items in this catalogue were out of the reach of the general public in Japan at that time, the range in the catalogue offers a glimpse of affluent modern life Japanese families aspired to. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 170398).
