Ho was born in 1911, and "passed from romanticism through disillusionment to communism" in a single decade. The poems are personal, but the essays move into the countryside and show the tragedies of the old ways of life (as well as their beauties) and also increasingly reflect China under the influence of the Western impact. Most of the work included here is from the period 1931 - 42.
