Pencilled details of book in English front free endpaper, occasional light browning and soiling but generally very good and clean. Original cloth worn at corners and a little rubbed on the spine. 26 x 19.5 cm The names of the beetles are introduced in Latin and Japanese, and the plate is followed by an explanation in Japanese of each beetle.

There are people in Japan who keep beetles as pets. Lafcadio Hearn stated in a university lecture that "Japanese and Ancient Greeks are the only people who really love insects."
