Stock ID #131576 Fine view of a fortress at Tianjin harbour engraved from the view by Johan Nieuhof (as the caption on the banner attests) and published in his first hand account of the Dutch Embassy to China in 1655-57: one of the earliest European attempts at an accurate description of China and the Chinese people. This engraving by Frans de Bakker appeared in Johann Joachim Schwabe's monumental collected voyage accounts "Allgemeine Historie der Reisen..." published over nearly thirty years (1747 - 1774).
