Leipzig. Schmidt & Spring. Stock ID #140152
Colour frontispiece, 3 full page black and white illustrations, 139pp, little light occasional even discolouration, corners a little worn, very good copy in original pictorial yellow cloth. An interesting example of German colonial literature. Set in the German colony of Schantung this novel is a typical of Western views of China at the time. The title which translates as ‘Fleeing from the Chinese’ reflects these attitudes as do the illustrations. From the four Chinese men running down a path with clubs raised which adorns the upper cover to the full page image of frightened Europeans clubbing an invading Chinese man from his ladder to prevent his entry into the building in which they sheltered while an angry Chinese mob below looks on.
