The title which translates as ‘Fleeing from the Chinese’ reflects these attitudes as do the illustrations. From the four Chinese men running down a path with clubs raised which adorns the upper cover to the full page image of frightened Europeans clubbing an invading Chinese man from his ladder to prevent his entry into the building in which they sheltered while an angry Chinese mob below looks on.
