Washington. D.C. Army Map Service, U.S. Army. 1944. Stock ID #154026
Printed double sided on fabric. Shows South Borneo and West Java. Scale 1:1,000,000. Legend, conversion chart, glossary, altitude chart featured. Some brown staining and spotting mainly to the edges. A very good copy. Maps such as these were issued to defence force personnel during conflict. They were hidden, for example sewn into their jackets, sealed into cans of foods etc, so that in the event of an enforced landing over enemy territory the servicemen would be able to avoid capture and make their way to safe territory. Evasion maps were light, durable and did not rustle due to being printed on silk or fabric rather than paper. Fascinating for the detail they record these maps also bring into sharp focus the risks that were taken by these young men. Originally issued as a restricted map. Restrictions on use are no longer in effect. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 154026).
