Lettering in black on upper cover bright. Good copy. Hugh Clifford (5 March 1866 - 18 December 1941) first arrived in Malay at the age of 17. He served in the Malayan administration from 1883 - 1903 and then after postings elsewhere he came back to Malay for the last 3 years of his career in 1927 - 29. Malaya made a deep impact on Clifford as his many stories such as those in Malayan Monochromes show. He describes the way the people lived in the period just before Western influence became dominant.
